Find your photos
Open your saved pictures and make sure wildlife shots count toward the Compendium.
Open the folder from the game
- Open the main menu and choose Extras.
- Use the option to open the screenshots folder.
- Copy the pictures you want to keep or share to a folder of your choice.
Players report that this opens the saved pictures beyond the five menu previews. It also avoids guessing a Linux or Proton installation path.

Windows, Linux and Steam Deck
On Windows, players report the folder under Documents → My Games → over the hill → screenshots. The reported spelling of “My Games” varies, and Documents can be redirected by Windows or OneDrive. Use Extras to find the exact folder for your installation.
On Linux or Steam Deck, the location depends on whether you use the native game or a Windows build through Proton, and where the game is installed. Use the in-game folder shortcut first, then inspect it in Desktop Mode on Deck if needed. A single hard-coded Proton path would be misleading.
Steam screenshots are a separate collection: an image captured with Steam’s screenshot shortcut belongs to Steam’s screenshot manager. Do not expect the wildlife camera’s pictures to appear there automatically.

Why didn’t my animal photo count?
Use the Safari Camera tool for wildlife registration. Free-camera Photo Mode is for composing pictures and does not replace the wildlife tool. Center the animal, keep a suitable distance, and make sure scenery is not blocking it.
Players describe a green indicator for an undiscovered animal, orange for a previously discovered one, and grey when the tool has not acquired a valid subject. If a shot does not register, check the tool and indicator before treating it as a save bug.
Use the photo-hunt planner to choose species and conditions, then record the discoveries in your completion dashboard.
