Getting started

Over the Hill ships without an in-game tutorial. These are the game's own how-to tips — driving, recovery, meteorites, photography and more — straight from the driving-school walkthrough and tool descriptions.

Driving & terrain

Automatic transmission allows for a really calm and meditative ride. But if you feel like being in more control, you can switch to manual transmission in the control settings.
On rough terrain or uphill, use Low Range to gain more traction. On regular terrain, switch back to High Range to gain speed. Choose your routes carefully and be mindful not to get stuck somewhere.
If your vehicle struggles on slopes, engage Low Range to gain more traction.
Remember that on difficult terrain or uphill, engaging Low Range provides the vehicle with more traction.
Remember, on regular terrain you can use High Range to move faster.
At night, it’s impossible to navigate without turning on the vehicle’s headlights.
Release the handbrake and maneuver to reach the road.

Getting unstuck & recovery

If your vehicle gets stuck, look around to find something to attach the winch to. A tree is perfect! The object it will latch onto is the one closest to the center of the camera.
Select the attachment point on your vehicle, then select the object you want to attach the winch to.
Sometimes you need more control when using the winch. For these situations, there is the manual Winch.
If you get stuck, flip over, or get bogged down, open the radial menu and try using your Tools. If you don’t have any, or if they’re not enough, your last option is to respawn by selecting a discovered cabin on the map.
Ended up upside down? Flip your car upright and reposition it nearby.
Place a set of two wooden planks in a radius around you. Useful to cross gaps and obtain grip in otherwise rough terrains.
When you need a helping hand the most, it's there for you!
It immediately stops that annoying squeak and restores peak performance.

Meteorites

Explore the world in search of meteorites. At night you can see their glow from afar. Extract them with the winch to earn Pebbles and upgrade your vehicle.
The meteorite radar can help find you meteorites!

Wildlife & photography

Use the Safari Camera to photograph the wildlife for your compendium. To take a valid photo of an animal, make sure the subject is in the center of the frame, at the correct distance (neither too close nor too far), and not obscured by other elements.
This is the Compendium. Here you can find all the photos of wildlife you can encounter during your adventures. Find all the animals in a region to unlock a reward.

Camping & weather

Using the camping kit while all the players are grouped up allows you to place a camp site. Camping makes time pass extremely quick, allowing you to possibly skip unfavorable weather or lighting conditions.
Can't find a suitable camping area. Try moving to a flatter surface, with less obstacles.
Clears the skies of bad weather for a set amount of time.

Map, cabins & exploration

Cabins are rest points: they are used to restore everything and for fast travel. They also reveal part of the map. Open the map to discover the surroundings.
Reach the Cabins to repair your vehicle and restore equipped tools. Cabins are also spawn points: by opening the map and selecting the icon of a discovered cabin, you can fast travel to it at any time. Additionally, cabins allow you to see nearby points of interest on the map.
All the icons you see on the map are points of interest. Go there and see what they hide. If your vehicle gets stuck somewhere along the way, or if you want to quickly move to another area, open the map and select a discovered cabin to respawn.
This is your map. To begin your adventure, move the cursor and choose which discovered cabin you want to spawn from.
Look for crates around the regions and approach them to discover what they contain.
Remember that every area hides a passage leading to a completely new and unexplored area. Find it!
In the radial menu, you can also find Tools to help you during exploration, as well as the Cassette Player, the Safari Camera and the Compendium to make your journeys unforgettable. Discover them!

Merchant & upgrades

From the Merchant you can change your vehicle or upgrade and customize it. You can also use the merchant as a respawn point by selecting its icon on the area map.
Increases the height at which the engine starts flooding.
